"Constitution Day"

Friends and Colleagues,

As you begin the Fall term, either as new or returning students at Toyota Technological Institute at Chicago, I want to take this opportunity to welcome you, and wish you every success in your studies this year. In addition, I want to tell you about "Constitution Day"

Beginning in 2005, a new federal law requires all schools that receive federal funds to hold educational programming on the United States Constitution every year on September 17, the anniversary of the signing of our country's founding document.

I would like to invite you to discover some of the interesting and informative materials about the Constitution that are available online through the National Archives and elsewhere.

I hope that each of you will take a few moments to do so now through this webpage. This brief exploration can spark your curiosity and - whatever your academic focus, whatever your country of citizenship or your political affiliation - broaden your knowledge of, and your appreciation for, this historically important document. Perhaps you may reflect upon how this document affects the study of computer science, and/or scientific research in general.

You are fortunate to be members of a larger academic community at the University of Chicago, where you have access to a variety of historical, political, sociological and legal perspectives on the study of the U.S. Constitution through the resources available from the University of Chicago library system.

The start of a new academic year is an opportune time to reflect upon the unique privileges and freedoms offered students in the United States. I hope that you take this time to explore any interests aroused by the resources mentioned herein.

Again, I wish you prosperity in all your academic studies in the coming year.

Sincerely,

David McAllester
Chief Academic Officer
